Remember your old days, when you used a bicycle to go to school. You never turned back after you got a bike and now a car. Present day demand is to become eco-friendly and we are again going back to school days by the use of bicycle. These are the best means of transport for villagers. This can also be used as toys for children, fitness machines for exercisers, recreation through bicycle touring or mountain biking, supply of provisions and patrolling by military, generation of electricity for electronics etc.

Let’s understand the mechanism of working of a bicycle. A bicycle has its center of gravity over the wheels being steered by the rider. It leans slightly while taking

a turn rather than being straight while moving forward. When applying brake, a stopping force is applied at the front wheel which lifts the rear wheel and avoids tipping. It consists of brakes and gears which help to maintain an optimum pedaling speed in various terrains. Gears differ for different people and cycling styles. The pedals help the crank to rotate. This is held in axis by bottom bracket. There is a chain to transmit power to real wheel. This rotates the real wheel via a gear is connected to the wheel’s hub. Its efficiency signifies both biological and mechanical aspects. It is a self-powered means of transportation and at average speed requires energy equivalent to walking.

Bicycle manufacturing opened gates for other metal work techniques like frames, bearings, washers etc. These provided a base for metal works of automobiles and aircraft. It has gone through many evolutionary stages before getting the present shape and style. Men and women have different styles of bicycle. Most of the men bicycles today have a frame with upright seating resembling a chain-driven bike. While the women’s bicycles have bent rods connected in the middle instead of the top.

Now the countries are implementing cycle sharing programmes, where in, you can take a bicycle at one station, use it for a limited time and then return it. You need to submit your I-card for the same and get it back only on returning the bicycle. This is being encouraged to avoid pollution and make the environment smoke-free.
