A lot of consumers are still not quiet clear about the meaning of the term data logger, how they are used and what the benefits of data logger are. Well, a data logger is a tool that is extremely helpful in providing important data information for analysis.
Let us keep it simple. A data logger is nothing but an electronic device that collects as well as records data or information over a period of time. This information can be both simple and complex. It can be a simple temperature or humidity measurement or the much complicated measurement of flow in a liquid or the changes in the quality of air. The information, regardless of whether it is simple or complex, is collected by the data logger from the source using sensors connected to it.
The data is collected and stored in the memory area of the data logger. This makes it readily available for the user. The data logger facilitates the user to analyze the data either at a later date or in real time.
The data stored in data logger can be viewed in several ways- either in the raw form, or in the format of charts and graphs.
There are various types of data loggers available in the market. Each data logger is designed for specific tasks ranging from the large desktop based machines to personalized bespoke portable data loggers.
Larger systems were used by laboratories and researchers in the yesteryears. They used to carry the collection of data of large-scale projects. This proved to be an expensive process. Moreover, the data collection was used only in the crucial areas of industry.
Technological advancement has now resulted in the production of surface mount components and multi layered circuit boards which has reduced the bulky size of complex data loggers. Now, the data loggers come in the form of portable hand held instruments with greater flexibility and lower power consumption. This allows the collection of monitoring of data an easy task, which can be done even in the remotest areas.
The data loggers of yesteryears used to be large and costly pieces of equipments that were difficult to transport. It used to take a lot of time to set up and retrieve data from the data loggers. Things have changed since then. Now, data retrieval can be done at a fraction of the previous cost. Wireless data loggers are available in the stores today which are equipped with Bluetooth, 802.11 b/g. They have become an inevitable tool for many researchers and industry specialists.
Data loggers are now used in an array of companies including oil refineries, aircraft and aviation, car manufacturers, hospitals, water boards and almost everywhere where the data is recorded in some form or the other.
