Comments Voice over Internet Protocol may replace your landlines!
![]() |
Connecting people across the world has become easier. We are talking about Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), a protocol optimized for the transmission of voice through the Internet or other packet switched networks. VoIP is often used abstractly to refer to the actual transmission of voice (rather than the protocol implementing it).
The “Netizens” are now more and more opting for the use of VoIP, an alternative way to make calls. In this infrastructure provided by the Internet, you don’t have to use traditional landlines. VoIP are made using computers. This is particularly becoming popular for long distance calls due to greatly reduced cost.
Most people prefer using VoIP to connect to other users with VoIP because this is absolutely free. But, VoIP is not free if you want to connect to someone with a standard phone-although the cost is still a lot cheaper.
So if you want to talk to your loved ones in the other part of the world, all you need to do is get software (preferably Skype) installed on your home PC with a microphone. This way, you can either connect to another VoIP service provider such as a VoIP –enabled phone or a computer or by connecting VoIP to a standard landline. You’ll require a paid service with a company such as Vonage or Lingo. The calls are still a lot cheaper as opposed to a standard landline.
VoIP is expected to replace the standard telephone systems in the next couple of decades.
