Manufacturers are choosing to label their digital cameras with the total (optical x digital) zoom which is confusing the consumers. Total zoom is actually the combination of Optical Zoom and Digital Zoom.
In this article, we discuss about the optical zoom vis-à-vis digital zoom. Read on.
Optical zoom uses the lens (optics) of the camera to bring the subject closer.
On the other hand, digital zoom is not exactly zooming. Digital zoom enlarges a portion of the image, ‘stimulating’ optical zoom.
Optical zoom doesn’t affect the picture quality whereas, when a picture is enlarged by digital zoom, the image loses its quality.
Higher optical zoom is beneficial for your camcorder. This is because; a higher optical zoom will produce clearer pictures. The pictures are enlarged by the actual lenses. This allows you to capture a video from farther distance effectively, without affecting the quality of the pictures.
On the other hand, a digital zoom enlarges a picture, but reduces the overall picture quality. The picture is artificially enlarged by the digital zoom (hence the name “digital”).
However, we should not strictly ignore digital zoom. It is perhaps an inevitable part of all digital cameras. By zooming digitally in camera, you get to see what your subject is doing and thus can capture the shot at the right moment.

Olympus E-420 is supposed to be the world’s smallest digital SLR, small enough (5.1 inches by 3.6 inches by 2.1 inches) and lightweight to fit into your purse with ease! It has all the features for the output of great pictures. The innovative and unique Olympus Autofocus Live View function allows you to frame and focus your photos using the large 2.7-inch LCD as a viewfinder.
The unique digital experience is created by two innovative technologies. The E-420’s on-Screen Autofocus works as seamlessly as a point-and-shoot to display subjects in focus on the LCD the instant the shutter is pressed half way. And the Live View LCD, enables photographers to hold the camera away from their faces and at angles they just cannot reach by using the optical viewfinder alone.
The E-420’s Face Detection feature distinguishes between people’s faces and the background. This innovative technology tracks up to eight faces within the image area and automatically focuses and optimizes exposure for sharp, brilliant portrait pictures.
Shooting scenes with shadows can be tricky at times because of the extreme contrast between dark and bright areas. With its Shadow Adjustment Technology, the E-420 compensates for extreme contrast when shadow areas are underexposed and lack visible detail. This technology works automatically when using Face Detection Mode, Live View and in Scene Select Modes.
You can produce spot-free photographs with Olympus’ proven Dust Reduction System with the exclusive Supersonic Wave Filter. The patented ultrasonic technology vibrates to remove dust and other particles from the front of the image sensor and captures it on a special adhesive membrane every time the camera is turned on.
New and Improved HyperCrystal II Technology delivers twice the contrast and better viewing in extreme lighting conditions, a broader range of color detail, and a wider angle of view on the LCD so you and your friends can see it up to 176 degrees off-center.
The E-420 facilitates detailed, colorful and clear images with the 10-megapixel Live-MOS image sensor. This high-resolution sensor captures all the detail needed to make large prints, or even crop without losing detail. The E-420 sensor’s high dynamic range, accurate color rendition and low noise characteristics let you capture great images, even at high ISO settings.
Perfect Shot Preview enables you to view and select your favorite effect right on the LCD, and see how the image will look before you even capture it, so you know that what you see is what you get.
All in all, Olympus E-420 is a creative wonder for the photography enthusiasts!
